you can’t beat death but
you can beat death in life, sometimes.
and the more often you learn to do it,
the more light there will be.
your life is your life.
know it while you have it.
you are marvelous
the gods wait to delight
I dream you equally, whether far or near,
But you are exact, without replica always,
You become music beneath my tranquil gaze,
As if with a glance, I see you through the ear.
You can be in me as though beneath my eye,
So melodious your heart, that heart open wide,
And I hear you beat in my forehead secretly
When you flow in me in order to disappear.
Memory, hither come,
And tune your merry notes;
And, while upon the wind
Your music floats,
I’ll pore upon the stream
Where sighing lovers dream,
And fish for fancies as they pass
Within the watery glass.
I’ll drink of the clear stream,
And hear the linnet’s song;
And there I’ll lie and dream
The day along:
And, when night comes, I’ll go
To places fit for woe,
Walking along the darken’d valley
With silent Melancholy.
We talked about flowers,
and her poetry classes,
and the problems she’d have
if she ever wore glasses.
It’s great to know a girl
who has so many eyes,
but you really get wet
when she breaks down and cries.
Supra li noti fermi di lu cori,
stabili e fermi a non mutarsi mai,
fannu li mei pinzeri varij mori
contrapuntandu cui pocu e cui assai.
E tu, memoria, alli vuci sonori
cci porti lu cumpassu undi chi vai
ducimenti cantandu sti palori:
Beneditta sia lura chi t’amai!
Cyprian, in my dream
the folds of a purple
your cheeks — the one
Timas one time sent,
a timid gift, all
the way from Phocaea
Ah, many a face as this saw I
like monthly rose’s splendour die,
as butterfly-dust brief!
Fate’s hand too firmly must have grasped,
and sin’s trace to such lives have clasped
like snail’s slime on the leaf.
The world’s about to break.
The world’s about to chuck out all its light
and stuff us in the chokepit of its dark,
That black and fat suffocated place
Where we will kill or die or dance or weep
Or scream or whine or squeak like mice
To renegotiate our starting price.
